Washington DC South Mission: Week 90: May 1, 2016

Hey family,

So I will just try and Skype when Daniels doing his which is 7pm East coast time. Are we going to do a google hangout? If so I let me know so I can make an arrangement to Skype at a members rather than just use my IPad. 

(FYI friends, our missionaries get to call home twice a year Christmas and Mothers Day for one hour)

So this week was a pretty good one for us. We were able to have a lesson with our investigator Elliot from the Congo. We read the book of Mormon with him and answered some questions. He said that he would come to church next week which is really good. 

We were not however, able to have a lesson with Lenora or Cat our single moms. Hopefully we can this next week...On Tuesday night we went to a girl from Ethiopia who said we could come back. We started teaching the restroration and as soon as we got to the 1st vision she said "She didn't want to learn any more". My companion and I were super confused. We were using a pamphlet with a picture of God and Christ appearing to Joseph Smith. When she saw the picture she said "that ok I don't need to hear anymore". We were thinking she didn't agree with the Godhood or something. Anyways there was a little bit of a language barrier so we just said ok and left. Elder Abney and I were pretty puzzled afterwards.

 Anyways. Saturday morning we drove down to Burke for Warren Cheeks baptism. His wife's a member of the Burke ward but he never was super interested in God. When Elder Burleson and I were there he did take us golfing, fishing, and out to eat on pdays despite not being super interested in joining our discussion that we had with his wife. We would usually read scriptures with her weekly and he would say hello for a few minutes and go back to his own business. In his talk he said one day he had a "revelation sitting at his desk one morning that there was a God". Anyways so he got baptized and it was super great. All baptisms are big but his was bigger than others. He's someone that will come in and immediately contribute to the church. He's also 60 which is cool. Most people his age are set in their ways. It was also good to see a big piece of fruit from my labors in Burke. As you know I didn't like burke. It was hot, we had a big area on bike during the summer months, and I never saw any success. In fact the whole area I never had an investigator at church and didn't really have any real investigators. just people that we would stop by. So knowing that I did something while I was there felt pretty rewarding. It was also really good to see all the members who were in the burke ward. So that's about all. 

Today for pday were going to the mission home with our zone for a BBQ. I look forward to skyping everyone for the last time on my mission. Love you all, Logan.

Washington DC South Mission: Week 89: April 25, 2016

Hey family,

This last week we found in the words of dad the "honey spot". We got 2 new investigators and a lot of potentials from this one area of town homes. Literally everydoor was somewhat interested unless they were from the middle east or Indian. A lot of people from Africa lived in this complex. Places like Ghana, Cameroon, Congo, Togos, Etc. Pretty much all foreigners answered. The two white people who did answer were single moms. We ended up teaching both of them and they became our new investigators this week. 

We are meeting with one on Tuesday and the other Saturday. This week im also going back to Burke to see someone I knew there get baptized which will be good. His names Warren Cheek. He isn't a member but would always take Elder Burleson and I golfing and fishing on pdays. When I was there I wasn't sure if he would ever join. He seemed like the type that would never join. Really nice guy. So it will be good to see the fruits of my labors in Burke. That was by far my least favorite area that I've served in. While I was there I didn't have one investigator at church the whole time. So that should be good. Looking forward to skyping with everyone in a few weeks. Congrats to Ryanfor his graduation from college BYU.

Washington DC South Mission: Week 88: April 18, 2016

Elder Frew to the BUNNY RESCUE!

Hey family,


This week was a good week for us. On Tuesday we taught a lesson to a
family who's recently had their dad die. They've got some young kids
too and he wasn't old at all. So we taught the restoration. We're just
going to have lessons with them weekly. They are all members but it
was good to just help this family out who's kinda gotten the shaft
recently. Then toward the end of the week we did 3 days of service in
the afternoons which was a nice change of pace. While I was pulling
weeds I saw something move in a hole in the garden that we were
re-doing. I looked in and saw four little baby rabbits. So I got a box
and took them home since we had to destroy there home anyways. Then
after a few days when I realized they were too young to eat the old
carrots I gave them, and I decided to go put them back.

 Then on Saturday we had a youth conference where all the priests and laurels 
(youth ages: 14-16 both boys and girls) went out with the elders and sisters. 

We had lots of people in our area working which was good. We got like 9 potentials
investigators just from me and the two priests who came out with me. 
So hopefully we see something good come from that finding. 

We also had our first lesson this transfer.
And it's the last week of a 7 week transfer. The guys name Is Elliot
from the Congo. We taught the restoration of the Priesthood  and 
he said we could come back next week.  So overall we had a  pretty good week.
 This morning I got permission to register for college and got most of my
classes I needed. However for some reason it wouldn't let me get English
because it needed some department clearance. But  don't worry I
emailed my counselor and told her. And English should be pretty easy
to get a class for. I'm taking:

English intro to writing
US economic history....
physical science
 humanities through the arts
And American music

I have to be in Utah on August 18th for a "jump start meeting" in order
to keep my classes that I've registered for.


Also last night we were about to go tracking for the Night when I
got a call from Elder Bunn my old companion and said that John Afroilan ( A man
Logan was able to baptize some months ago)  was
speaking at a fireside in 40 mins in Arlington. We immediately put
suits on and took a toll road down towards Arlington. We walked in the
chapel right when he started speaking. It was a really good fireside.
He had a good testimony and it was one of those days that you love
being a missionary.

Washington DC South MIssion: Week 87: April 11, 2016

I'm not just a fisher of Fish,....following the example of Apostles being FISHERS  of  MEN! 

This morning for pday I went fishing and caught 2 nice little bass. Good way to start the week off. But this last week we had some good stuff happen. We found a girl from Ghana and her brother or maybe boyfriend. She invited us right in because it was cold as all get how this last week. She said we could come back next weekend. Ghana people are always super receptive. Only there's  a little bit of a language barrier so that may bring up an issue. 

We also stopped by and set up a time to come teach a part member family in our ward. They were super nice. He's not active. He came home from the mtc and that was kind of the start. She was raised Baptist but hasn't followed since a kid. So that was good. This will be our first real lesson since I've been in this area which will be great. This next weeks we have zone training and a youth conference where two priests (young men ages 16-18 years of age in the church which hold the office of Priest is what Logan is referring to) come and do a few hours of missionary work with us to see what a mission is like. We have a lesson set up for them, so hopefully it goes through. 

I did get your package this week too with the opened plant protein. My guess is that mom bought the protein and gave it to beaker. Beaker tasted some and didn't like the taste so they sent it to me. ha ha Thanks! I've never had plant protein before.

Well we don't have too much time today. Were going to play some baseball and soccer. Last week for pday we did the same thing and I had the game of my life for soccer. I stink at soccer and we actually were playing with 2 kids that play college soccer and I scored 4 goals! I was on fire.

Washington DC South Mission: Week 86: April 4, 2016

Hey family, 

So conference was good this weekend. We watched all the
Saturday sessions at the church including priesthood. I pretty much
didn't get too much from the first two sessions because I didn't
prepare myself for the messages. But made sure I was ready for the
priesthood session. I really liked Elder Nelson's talk along with Elder
Uchtdorf's talk...but during priesthood there was a few funny  things
that happened. So my friend Elder Hild(Robbie) who went to BYU with me
walked in like 15 late minutes to priesthood with a cookie in one hand
and a water bottle in the other so everyone looking at him. Then he
comes to my bench which was the very last middle pew and steps over
the seat while his companion walks around. Ha ha it didn't even phase him
that he just stepped over a pew in front of the stake priesthood. And
a few other things.

Yesterday we watched the morning conference at our bishops house. He
has three smaller kids and it was really funny to see how quickly they
got bored with conference. It hadn't even been the 1st speaker yet and
they were already horse playing under the blanket. It made me think of
how bored we used to get when we were little and you guys made us watch

conference. We'd would usually just play monopoly or Risk upstairs  and

play around while usually mom and dad and maybe on a good year Karli

would be downstairs watching conference.

Not much else happened this week. Still looking for people to teach
and what not. I had my endure to the end meeting where president talks
to the missionaries who have just a few transfers left which was good for me.

Washington DC South Mission: Week 85: March 28, 2016

My Mission Zone

Hey family,
So this week we had a few appointments set up with people that we
found tracking, but they pretty much all fell though. Although last
night we got in with a less active member who's now a practicing
Presbyterian. He was a really nice guy. He talked with us for a good half
hour or so telling us about himself and what not. We asked if we could
come back and teach both he and his wife and he said that was fine.
His wife is not a member either. But other than not much happened.

 We didn't meet with Tre this week. The area I'm in is really slow. We
also did service for a guy who lives in a different area and is not a
member  with a few other elders from our zone. That was pretty
fun. We aerated his lawn and then lay ed  grass seed and compost. 

There was a pretty funny story that happened too. So there's
this new missionary who's been out like 1 or 2 transfers who's a huge
brown noser. He always tries to get attention and we're laying the compost
 down when he gets a great idea to instead of shovel it out of the wheel barrel 
like everyone else to use the lawn mower that had a a dump truck kinda
attachment to the back. 

So as someone is driving he was planning to  dump it out
evenly onto the lawn. What do you know, he dumped like all of it out
and fricked it all up ha ha. Then the guy who's not a member got ticked off
at him hahah. 

Today for PDay were going into DC to see the cherry
blossoms. Our Easter dinner canceled on us so we
went to another family that offered to feed us. 

Well hopefully this week we see something happen. I'm excited for general
conference this weekend.

Hi Family, 
We just had a Washington DC Capitol tour this morning and literally as soon as we left the Capital building
someone went in and shot up the visitor center. One cop was injured we dodged a bullet this time.
(It should be on the news tomorrow, and it was!)

Washington DC South: Week 84: March 21, 2016

 

Hey family,

So it's actually been pretty nice here temperature wise until Saturday when I got really cold. Earlier in the week it had been in the mid 70s which isn't usual for this time of year. We only have one investigator named Tre who's wife is a member and who's coming back to church after being inactive since college. We did also had 3 other sets of elders come help us find some people this Saturday so we have a few potentials investigators we are going to try and go by and visit. You asked if I was a zone leader still. No I'm not anything right now which is really nice. I hope I can just fly under the radar for the next little bit of my mission so I don't have to train. I haven't seen anything on my application for the scholarship yet. But they are now switching portals from uv link...to my UVU.Edu...The password and stuff is the same for uv link its just a new portal. So you should start using that now. My counselor said I'm good to register on the 18th for the following classes ENGL 1010, History, Physical Science and Fine Arts. So that's not too far away. Dad, keep looking for a truck for me to buy when I get home too.

So this week week we had interviews with President Huntsman which was really good. I also talked with him a little more a few days later in his office. Sunday I taught third hour to the priests and laurels in our ward. It went pretty well. Other than that we saw some members this week and less actives. And tried to find more people for us to teach. Nothing too exciting this week. I wasn't able to see the videos of Ofelia walking. You have to send the video from an ipad or something. I can't see it if there's a link to somewhere because everything is blocked.
